INTRODUCTORY SPANISH 11

French 8                                                                                                                           

This is an introductory course designed for beginners and those who have studied some French in elementary school.  Students develop basic listening, speaking, reading, writing and interacting skills, while exploring theme-based vocabulary and foundational grammatical concepts.  The course’s language structure introduces learners to the Francophone world and culture.  Emphasis is based on student participation by doing oral activities in small groups or partners and through projects.

French 9                                                                                                                          

Students continue to improve French skills with concentration on listening, speaking, reading, writing and interacting.  Theme-based vocabulary and further grammatical concepts continue to be explored with more extensive language structures.

French 10

French skills involving listening, speaking, reading, writing and interacting are intensified with more sophisticated patterns of language using theme-based vocabulary and more complex grammatical concepts.  The cultural component that goes along with learning a new language continues to be stressed.  Student participation is essential, with many speaking activities in partners and small groups as well as more elaborate projects.

French 11

The focus is to improve the students’ ability to understand spoken and written French and to communicate with a measure of confidence and accuracy.  Vocabulary development continues and students are introduced to more difficult grammatical concepts.  An awareness of Francophone cultures around the world is a component of the course.  Greater emphasis is placed on writing and reading, including short stories, poetry, and authentic documents. Students will continue to speak and interact in French using realistic situations.

French 12

Students perfect the language skills learned in previous French courses, and add sufficient vocabulary and linguistic skills to their repertoire to enable them to communicate information and ideas to express themselves clearly and coherently in French for various purposes and to a variety of audiences. Students’ projects are presented to the classroom. The course also includes an exploration of French literature, with an emphasis on reading and composition.

 French Immersion Program

 This is a continuation of the Elementary School Program and conforms to provincial curriculum outlines.

Français langue 8                                                                                                       

This course develops French language competency in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills as well as exploring Francophone culture around the world. Reading comprehension skills are developed through the study of various texts such as short stories and novels. They will improve their listening comprehension and oral skills through engaging with francophone and indigenous legends. The writing process is introduced exploring grammatical concepts, sentence structure and paragraph construction.

 Français langue 9                                                                                                  

This course continues to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and will continue to have various opportunities to learn about the diversity of Francophone cultures around the world. Students will continue to develop their reading comprehension through articles, novels and fables. The writing process is further reinforced through reviewing and building upon grammatical concepts, sentence structure and multi-paragraph construction. Students will continue to strengthen their oral skills through dialogues, skits and discussions.

 Français langue 10                                                                                                    

Students continue to develop reading and listening comprehension skills through more complex literary and audiovisual texts. The writing process is further reinforced with more difficult grammatical concepts and will keep building on familiar ones. Students are expected to write in a variety of styles by exploring poetry elements and short stories. The cultural component of this course provides students with opportunities to strengthen their knowledge of the Francophone world. Emphasis is placed on oral skills throughout the course and students will be resenting individually and in small groups.

Français langue 11

(Études du cinéma et de la littérature francophones 11)                                                                      

Français langue 11 will be taught through Études du cinéma et de la littérature francophones 11. French-Language Film and Literary Studies 11 is designed to encourage students to discover, explore, analyze, interpret, reflect and critique cinematographic and literary works of the French-speaking world. This component of the course will enable students to discover cinematographic works from different eras, cultures, styles, and genres. In the literary component, students will acquire knowledge of Francophone culture, which will contribute to their francophone identity. All language skills: listening and reading comprehension, writing, oral productions will be used in the various projects of this course. Grammar concepts will continue to be reviewed and taught to further improve the language skills of students.

Français langue 12                                                                                                     

Prerequisite:  Français langue 11

This course places emphasis on perfecting the various language skills of listening and reading comprehension, writing, speaking while interacting and in a continuous and individual manner. Students will study various texts (written and audio-visual) and literary francophone and indigenous works providing them with the opportunity to learn more about the Francophone culture around the world. Students will learn and practice various communication strategies such as literary elements and text organizations to further their language skills. This course will help students develop their own French identity and the possibility to further explore their language skills in the future.

 Peuples autochtones en Colombie-Britannique 12 (BCFPF12)

(meets graduation requirement for an Indigenous-focused course)

B.C. First Peoples 12 looks into the many Indigenous Peoples who have inhabited this region since time immemorial. In this course, students will learn about the richness and diversity of these nations from the Salish Sea to the opening of the Plains in the northeast of this province. Challenged by colonialism, students will also immerse themselves in the resilience of these nations, from preserving traditions, creating new perspectives on modernity, speaking to the B.C. and Canadian court systems and often positively impacting the lives of First Peoples here and beyond. As a French immersion course, comparisons of similarities and differences between First Peoples of B.C. and Quebec will be explored through various text to broaden and expand the students’ cultural knowledge.

 Spanish 9

Students explore the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, learning basic vocabulary and language structures needed to communicate in real life situations, such as going to a Mexican restaurant.  Listening and speaking activities provide the focus, with some writing and reading.  Students learn concepts through various themes such as school, relationships, parties, sightseeing, family, and food!  A good attitude and a willingness to learn and to have fun are all you need!

 Spanish 10                                                                                                                       

Students continue to explore the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, expanding vocabulary and knowledge of the language’s structure.  Using themes including household chores, party preparations, sports, health, vacation, and leisure activities, students actively participate in individual and group language tasks (listening, speaking, reading, writing). Students are expected to have completed Spanish 9 and continue to use the textbook and workbooks from that course.

Introductory Spanish 11                                                                                 

This is a fast-paced introductory course in which students complete two years in one, learning to communicate competently in a short period of time.  Students explore the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, learning practical vocabulary and language structures needed to communicate in real life situations, such as ordering a meal in a Mexican restaurant.  Writing, reading, listening, and speaking activities are taught through various themes such as school, relationships, parties, sightseeing, family, and food.  Students’ participation and motivation is essential.  Successful completion enables students to continue to Spanish 11.

Spanish 11                                                                                                                        

The goal of this course is to improve the student’s ability to communicate spoken and written Spanish and to communicate with a measure of confidence and accuracy.  Vocabulary development continues and students learn more challenging grammatical concepts through writing and reading, including short stories, poetry, and authentic documents.  Investigating Hispanic culture around the world is also a component of this course. Student participation is essential.

 Spanish 12

This advanced course builds on language skills acquired in various Spanish courses.  Students continue to refine oral and listening comprehension skills, with the focus on reading and writing . Students further develop their confidence in their ability to communicate and feel competent in Hispanic environments around the world, and continue to discover Hispanic culture. Students continue to use the textbook and workbook from Spanish 11. Participation is essential. Students are expected to have completed Spanish 11 before taking Spanish 12.
