Physical and Health Education 8

Physical Health Education 8 introduces students to a wide variety of activities and experiences, with a focus on promoting lifelong physical and mental well-being. Activities may include football, volleyball, basketball, weight training, square dancing, softball, badminton, wrestling, minor games, and field games. Students also explore the short- and long-term benefits of proper nutrition and healthy relationships, deepening their understanding of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Physical and Health Education 9

Physical Health Education 9 builds on the skills and activities introduced in PHE 8, giving students the opportunity to further develop their fitness and abilities. Activities may include field hockey, rugby, soccer, volleyball, basketball, weight training, wrestling, badminton, and softball.

Physical and Health Education 10

This course offers students a wide range of physical activities designed to promote lifelong fitness. The focus is on game play in both team and individual sports, while also covering key concepts from the health and wellness curriculum, including first aid. PHE 10 provides opportunities for students to participate in off-campus activities such as gymnastics, skating, martial arts, and yoga.

Students must choose from one of the two PHE 10 courses.

Physical & Health Education 10 (Fit For Life)

Fitness for life will give students the opportunity to be active in a noncompetitive environment where they will receive classes to have a healthy lifestyle and mindset.  Focus will be on individual fitness and growth with such activities as yoga, pilates, cycle fit, circuit training, weight training and off campus activities (eg. gymnastics, oxygen yoga, etc). This course will also cover the aspect of the health and wellness curriculum and first aid.

Students must choose from one of the two PHE 10 courses

Active Living 11/12 (Physical & Health Education)

Students are offered a variety of activities that may include team sports, aquatics, racquet sports, outdoor and recreational pursuits, peer teaching, and optional field trips. Field trip opportunities may include activities such as bowling, Tsawwassen Springs Golf, a Salt Spring Island bike trip, kayaking at Deep Cove, ice skating, indoor rock climbing, curling, gymnastics, martial arts, laser tag, go-karting, tubing, and other experiences based on student interest.

$100 course fee is assessed to cover the cost of field trips and related activities. The emphasis of the course is on lifelong physical pursuits. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from off-campus activities. Each trip will require a new parental permission form to be completed. If costs are prohibitive to your child’s participation, please reach out to the school Principal for support. As always, all requests for financial aid will be treated with dignity, and your privacy will be respected.

Fit For Life 11/12

Fit for Life offers students an active, non-competitive environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle and positive mindset. Students will participate in a wide range of recreational and fitness activities, with an emphasis on individual fitness and personal growth. Activities may include yoga, pilates, cycle fit, weight training, aqua fit, and fitness classes. This mixed-grade course is designed to foster enjoyment and enthusiasm for physical activity while helping students develop healthy living practices that support lifelong wellness.

Students completing Fit For Life 11/12 will be given credit for Active Living 11/12.  

Fitness & Conditioning 11/12

Fitness & Conditioning is designed for highly motivated students interested in functional fitness and sport-specific training. Students will develop knowledge of advanced strength and conditioning techniques to support their individualized programs, along with deeper learning in anatomy and physiology, training principles, and sports nutrition, including performance-enhancing supplements. This course offers students the opportunity to enhance their overall fitness through individualized training, with a strong emphasis on weight training. Offered on campus at SDSS, students will build an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology while creating, implementing, and evaluating personal fitness goals. The course focuses on individual training principles to promote lifelong fitness and learning. There may be additional opportunities to participate in a variety of activities such as hiking, boot camps, CrossFit, HIIT, step classes, mixed martial arts, spin, hot yoga, biking, swimming, skating, squash, bowling, roller hockey, and beach volleyball.

Mental Health and Wellness 11/12

Mental Health and Wellness 11/12 is a course designed for students interested in better understanding the role that mental health plays in our lives. Students will learn about mental health, mental health literacy, mental illness, and mental wellness. Students will develop skills and strategies to increase their knowledge and personal skills in supporting their own mental health and the mental health of loved ones. This course will connect indigenous, western, and eastern ways of knowing and will be anchored in trauma-informed practice. This course will combine classroom learning, inquiry-based learning, guest speakers, and the active and intentional practice of the strategies and skills learned in the classroom.

PHE Recreational Leadership 11/12   (After school)

Recreational Leadership offers students the opportunity to explore and develop leadership skills within both the school and community. Students will demonstrate organizational and leadership skills while working independently and collaboratively in small groups. They will support the Varsity Athletic Program through scorekeeping, organizing and running tournaments, and assisting with the facilitation of the school’s intramural program. This course is not scheduled within the regular timetable; instead, students will meet during lunch periods, outside the timetable, and through involvement in after-school activities.
