SDSS Grad Handbook 2022-23

Grade 12 is an important year. It’s your last year of high school before you head off to pursue your post-secondary dreams. We encourage you to finish your time at SDSS strong. Develop your habits as a learner, strengthen your relationships with your community, and leave SDSS with a sense of pride and purpose.

This page will assist to keep you updates with information that will help you enjoy your grade 12 year.

Important Information

Grade 12 students must demonstrate good conduct and set a good example for their classmates and younger students. Any student or group of students who choose to attend a school event under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or be involved in other serious misconduct, may forfeit their privilege to participate in grad activities.

Grade 12 students are expected to be leaders at school and set good examples with the choices they make.

Major Grad Events

Valedictory

Cap and Gown Ceremony

Valedictory will be held on Wednesday, June 28th at the South Delta Baptist Church. The program begins at 7:00 pm.

Grad Gown Orders – Each grad will wear a gown for this formal ceremony, so we need to order you one. This link will take you to a Google form requesting your height- please ensure that you complete this form by January 26th. The gown is yours to keep! You must be logged in to your Delta Learns Account to access the form.

Grad One Liner—All grads planning to attend the ceremony are required to submit a quote or anecdote that will be read as they cross the stage. It should be 40 words or less and will be pre-approved by your English 12 teacher. One liners are being accepted now until mid-May. You can submit your one-liner here.

Valedictory Tickets – Seating at Valedictory is limited. Each grad will receive 4 tickets to share with family and friends. Tickets will be handed out with your grad gown.

A grad fee of $45 includes the purchase of your grad gown, cap, tassel and any other grad ceremony costs.

 Valedictorian

The Valedictorian is a representative of a graduating class who speaks on behalf of the graduates at the Valedictory Ceremony.

In May, Grade 12 students nominate themselves or a classmate for the honour of Class Valedictorian. The Valedictory Committee chooses the valedictorian from the nominations.

Criteria for the Valedictorian: representative of the class, commitment to learning, school involvement, excellent citizenship, strong public speaker

Grad Dinner and Dance

Wednesday, June 7th, 6:00 pm at Tsawwassen Springs Ballroom

The Grad Dinner and Dance is a formal event where students get dressed up and spend a very memorable evening together. Grads will share in a beautiful buffet dinner, listen to a few speeches, watch a slide show, and then dance the night away! Tickets will be available in May. Grad and school fees must be paid in order to reserve your table.

Dinner and Dance Ticket $160 approx.

This includes your dinner, and all the costs of putting on the event.

Grad Walk

The Grad “Red Carpet” walk will take place at the school at 4:30 pm on June 7th, prior to the Grad Dinner and Dance. Family and friends are invited to watch the grads parade the red carpet in their formal attire!

Dry Grad Event

Dry Grad is a drug and alcohol free event organized by volunteer parents. More information will be posted early in the new year.

Other Grad Events

Other grad activities are organized by the grad council. Grad activities require staff volunteers and administration willing to give up their time to supervise and ensure a safe, inclusive, and age appropriate event.

This year our grad council has organized a successful Grad “Fright Night” on October 26th. A Winter Formal is scheduled for Wednesday, January 11th.

Yearbook

Grads hold a special place in our school yearbook. However, you do need to meet some important deadlines in order to be included.

 Grad Write-Ups

Grads are invited to submit a grad write-up for the yearbook, via this link. You must be logged in to your Delta Learns account to complete the form. The write-up will accompany your grad photograph in the grade 12 section of the yearbook. Express your gratitude, share an inspirational quote, or relay a happy memory. Grad write-ups must not exceed 150 words; and must be approved by the school administration. Submissions are due by February 17, 2023.

Grad Baby Photos

Grads are also invited to submit a baby photo for inclusion in the yearbook.

  • Email your photo as an attachment to southdeltasunburst@gmail.com
  • Include your First and Last Name in the subject line of your email.
  • Photos can be sent as the following files, jpeg, png and tiff.

Submissions are due by February 17, 2023.

Grad Pet Photos

Grads are also invited to submit a photo of themselves with their pet for inclusion in the yearbook.

  • Email your photo as an attachment to southdeltasunburst@gmail.com
  • Include your First and Last Name with the title, “Pet Photo” in the subject line of your email.
  • Photos can be sent as the following files, jpeg, png and tiff.

Submissions are due by February 17, 2023.

Grad Photos

Grad Photos are separate from the regular school photos and are scheduled November 31 – December 9 at Artona’s Mobile Studio on site at SDSS. You can sign up for a photo session, order photos, etc. at Artona’s website … http://www.artona.com/.  A grad photo is included in the school yearbook and on the grad composite. There is a $60 sitting fee if you want to purchase grad pictures for friends and family.

Artona also offers a group photo session for SDSS students on January 20th at the Artona Studio. More information including online booking is available on their website.
