School Goals 2025-28
South Delta Secondary has identified two areas that the school will be working with students on developing and improving through the 2025-28 school years. The first is Social Citizenship – this is the ways in which we treat each other, interact with our community and advocate for positive change. The second is Resiliency – this is our ability to manage tough situations and bounce back from setbacks that occur in life. Increasing our capacity in both areas are goals that will develop important attributes to a successful citizen in the 21st century and will serve our students well at school and in their post-secondary endeavours.
While our work with students on these goals has been slower than anticipated, we have made progress in the last few months:
Establishments of Staff Working Group – Since Spring Break of this school year, a group of dedicated staff have met to develop our plans towards our work with the school goals. This group has met regularly to refine the goals, brainstorm ideas for how to introduce school goals concepts/learning with students and implement the initiatives we feel will provide students with an opportunity to engage in this important work.
Staff Professional Learning – To help with our effectiveness in engaging in our school goals, SDSS staff has engaged professional learning. Earlier this year, Destine Lord, District consultant on Justice and Equity, helped our staff expand our skills and confidence with intervening when harmful behaviour (particularly harmful comments) is observed. A stronger understanding in this area will help us improve our school’s Social Citizenship. Looking ahead, our professional development committee will be focussing on Resiliency and how school staff can effectively teach students to develop greater resiliency skills as they become adults.
Introduction of Resiliency Goal – We introduced our Resiliency goal with our grade 8-11 students through a powerful presentation by guest speak Ian Tyson. Mr. Tyson had previously spoken at SDSS when we hosted the BC Student Leadership Conference in October 2025. Mr. Tyson shared several stories and perspectives all tied to personal resiliency and how we see the world. This presentation, along with some pre and post presentation work in our English classes, allowed our students to consider their own views on what being resilient looks like, from surviving large, sometimes traumatic, events in our lives to navigating the day to day challenges we all face.
We expect the 2026-27 school year will be an event filled year for our students as we continue to work on these goals. We will continue to share our progress in this work through newsletters, our website and our Parent Advisory Council.
