FRENCH
Core French 8
Core French 8 is an introduction to the basics of the French language. Students learn simple words and phrases they can use in everyday situations, and they explore French‑speaking cultures through music, games, and short activities. The focus is on building confidence, trying new things, and having fun while learning a new language. No previous French experience is needed.
Core French 9
Core French 9 helps students continue developing their beginner French skills. Students learn how to talk about themselves, their interests, and their daily life using short sentences. They read and listen to simple French texts and learn more about French‑speaking communities around the world. The course emphasizes practical communication and steady skill‑building.
Core French 10
Core French 10 gives students more practice using French in familiar, everyday situations. Students learn useful vocabulary, read short passages, and create simple written and spoken projects. The course focuses on helping students understand the main ideas in French and express themselves clearly at their own pace. It’s a supportive next step for anyone who has completed French 9.
Core French 11
Core French 11 strengthens students’ ability to communicate in French in a comfortable, low‑pressure environment. Students explore short, authentic materials—such as videos, songs, and articles—and learn how to share their thoughts using straightforward language. The course focuses on practical communication, building confidence, and improving comprehension. It’s a good choice for students who want to continue with French without feeling overwhelmed.
Core French 12
Core French 12 allows students to use the French they’ve learned in meaningful and manageable ways. Students explore a variety of simple, real‑world texts and practice expressing their ideas with growing independence. The course emphasizes clear communication, cultural understanding, and personal expression. It is designed to support students who want to complete their language requirement while continuing to build useful skills for travel, work, or future studies.
FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAM
This is a continuation of the Elementary School Program and conforms to provincial curriculum outlines.
Français langue 8
This course develops foundational skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in French. Students explore a variety of texts—including legends, plays, and short novels—to build comprehension and vocabulary. Oral communication is supported through structured activities connected to Francophone and Indigenous stories. Writing instruction introduces key grammatical concepts, sentence structure, and paragraph development. A course fee of approximately $15 may be required for a verb‑conjugation wheel.
Français langue 9
This course continues to strengthen students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills while expanding their understanding of Francophone cultures around the world. Students work with articles, novels, and fables to deepen reading comprehension. Writing skills are reinforced through continued study of grammar, sentence structure, and multi‑paragraph composition. Oral communication is developed through dialogues, skits, and class discussions.
Français langue 10
Students further develop proficiency in French through engagement with more complex literary and audiovisual texts. Reading and listening comprehension are extended and writing skills are strengthened through the study of advanced grammatical concepts and a range of written forms, including poetry and short stories. Cultural learning remains an important component, offering opportunities to broaden knowledge of the Francophone world. Oral communication is emphasized through individual and small‑group presentations.
Français langue 11 (Études du cinéma et de la littérature francophone 11)
Français langue 11 will be taught through Études du cinéma et de la littérature francophones 11. French-Language Film and Literary Studies 11 is designed to encourage students to discover, explore, analyze, interpret, reflect and critique cinematographic and literary works of the French-speaking world. This component of the course will enable students to discover cinematographic works from different eras, cultures, styles, and genres. In the literary component, students will acquire knowledge of Francophone culture, which will contribute to the student’s francophone identity. All language skills: listening and reading comprehension, writing, oral productions will be used in the various projects of this course. Grammar concepts will continue to be reviewed and taught to further improve the language skills of students.
Français langue 12
This advanced course consolidates students’ language skills and prepares them for post‑secondary study or workplace use of French. Students engage with a wide range of authentic texts, including literature, film, and media, to develop strong interpretive and analytical abilities. Writing focuses on clarity, accuracy, and sophistication across multiple genres. Oral communication emphasizes confident, purposeful expression in formal and informal settings. Cultural inquiry encourages students to examine contemporary issues and perspectives within the Francophone world.
Peuples autochtones en Colombie-Britannique 12 (BCFPF12)
(Meets graduation requirement for an Indigenous-focused course and a Gr. 11/12 socials course)
B.C. First Peoples 12 investigates the many Indigenous Peoples who have inhabited this region since time immemorial. In this course, students will learn about the richness and diversity of these nations from the Salish Sea to the opening of the Plains in the northeast of this province. Challenged by colonialism, students will also immerse themselves in the resilience of these nations, from preserving traditions, creating new perspectives on modernity, speaking to the B.C. and Canadian court systems and often positively impacting the lives of First Peoples here and beyond. As a French immersion course, comparisons of similarities and differences between First Peoples of B.C. and Quebec will be explored through various text to broaden and expand the students’ cultural knowledge.
SPANISH
Spanish 9
Students explore the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, learning basic vocabulary and language structures needed to communicate in real-life, everyday situations. Throughout the course, students will develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. They will learn concepts through various themes, such as school, parties, sightseeing, family, and food! A good attitude and a willingness to learn and have fun are all you need! This course may require a workbook with a fee of approximately $45.
Spanish 10
Students continue to explore the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, expanding their vocabulary and use of various language structures. Through themes such as household chores, party preparations, sports, health, vacation, and leisure activities. Students actively participate in communicative tasks to continue developing their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students are expected to have completed Spanish 9 and will continue to use the textbook and workbook from that course. Students who do not have a workbook from Spanish 9 may need to purchase one. The workbook fee is approximately $45.
Introductory Spanish 11
This is a fast-paced introductory course in which students complete two years in one, learning to communicate competently in a short period of time. Students explore the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, learning practical vocabulary and language structures needed to communicate in real-life situations. Listening, speaking, reading and writing activities are performed through various themes, such as school, parties, sightseeing, family, and food. Student participation and motivation is essential. Successful completion enables students to continue to Spanish 11. This course may require a workbook with a fee of approximately $45.
Spanish 11
The goal of this course is to improve students’ ability to communicate in spoken and written Spanish and with a measure of confidence and accuracy. Vocabulary development continues and students learn more challenging language structures by exploring and discussing authentic documents in Spanish. Students will also use the language they have acquired to investigate various aspects of Hispanic cultures around the world. Student participation is essential. This course may require a workbook with a fee of approximately $45.
Spanish 12
This advanced course builds on language skills acquired in various Spanish courses. Students continue to refine oral and listening comprehension skills, with an increased focus on reading and writing. Students further develop their confidence in their ability to communicate and feel competent in Spanish-speaking environments, and they will continue to discover more about Hispanic cultures. Students continue to use the textbook and workbook from Spanish 11. Participation is essential. Students are expected to have completed Spanish 11 before taking Spanish 12. Students who do not have a workbook from Spanish 11 may need to purchase one. The workbook fee is approximately $45.
