Code of Conduct

 SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT ~

South Delta Secondary R.O.C.K.S.

Respect, Ownership, Community, Knowledge and, Safety

 At SDSS it is expected that students will:

  • Conduct themselves in an respectful manner when going to and from school, within school, on school grounds, during extended school activities and on school buses
  • Apply themselves to the best of their ability in all aspects of their education
  • Attend school and classes regularly and punctually
  • Be respectful of the thoughts, feelings and heritage of others
  • Respect the rights and property of others
  • Dress in a manner which is not offensive
  • Contribute positively to a safe learning environment
  • Report to a responsible adult, incidents of threats, bullying, harassment, violence or intimidation

 

In addition, it is expected that SDSS students will not:

  • Interfere with the learning of others
  • Use inappropriate or abusive language
  • Threaten, harass, intimidate, or bully, (including internet bullying), any person within the school community.
  • Bring to school weapons or dangerous articles
  • Possess, use, or distribute illegal substances
  • Steal or damage property
  • Cause harm or discriminate* against another person’s race, religion, gender, physical or intellectual disability, sexual orientation or age.
  • Engage in gang related behaviours

 

*The Human Rights Code states:  discrimination occurs when someone is treated differently and poorly because of their race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital or family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation or age.

 CONSEQUENCES

When determining consequences, and in compliance with Delta School District Procedure #1131.1, consideration is given to the maturity as well as the intellectual, social and emotional capacity of the student along with the severity and frequency of the misbehavior. Consequences should, where appropriate, follow District procedures and will:

  • Be thoughtful, consistent and fair
  • Seek to prevent a recurrence of the offense
  • Teach acceptable social behaviour rather than be merely punitive

And where appropriate

  • Provide means for restitution and restorative actions
  • Involve the offender in determining a corrective plan of action

NOTIFICATION

It is understood that communication is essential between home and school. As well, notice will be given to the parents and students within each school of the range of responses that schools may apply to breaches of the Code of Conduct including threat-making behaviours.

Therefore, for breaches of the Code of Conduct, notification may occur as follows:    

  • Parents of student in breach of the Code of Conduct
  • Parents of student victim(s)
  • School and District personnel – where appropriate
  • Police and/or other agencies – where deemed appropriate or where required by law
  • All parents of the school community – when deemed important to reassure members of the school community that school and district officials are aware of a serious situation or incident and are taking appropriate action to address it
  • When the breach of the Code of Conduct is criminal in nature, police will be consulted prior to public notification.

 

SDSS STUDENT-ATHLETE CODE OF CONDUCT

The actions of a student-athlete are a reflection of themselves, their team, their school, and their community. A student’s involvement in school sport provides opportunities and experiences that are important to the development of a well-rounded individual.  However, student-athletes must remember that their participation in school sport is a privilege, not a right. Therefore:

  1. Adherence to school policies with respect to attendance, behaviour, and scholastic achievement is a requirement of team membership, as is attendance at practices and games.  Problems in any of these areas could result in withdrawal from the team.
  2. No student athlete shall practice or play for any school team on a day that she/he was not in class, without prior and satisfactory notice to the coach/school administration.
  3. Student-athletes will:

1.       Treat Everyone with Respect

a.       including team-mates, coaches, opponents, event organizers and spectators.

b.       respect and accept, with dignity, the decisions of officials.

c.       be generous in winning and graceful in losing.

2.       Exercise Self-Control at all times

a.       remember that there is no place in sport for drugs or alcohol.

b.       refrain from the use of foul or profane language.

c.       refrain from the use of physical force outside of the rules of the game.

3.       Play Fair

a.       play within the rules and the spirit of the rules of the game at all times.

 SDSS SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT

Spectators are encouraged and welcomed to attend SDSS sporting activities and to abide by the following code of conduct.

 Spectators will:

  1. Treat Everyone with Respect
    1. Cheer in a positive manner for all competitors.
    2. Respect the decisions of officials.
    3. Not interfere with the play or competition
    4. Be courteous and respectful to other spectators, competitors, coaches, organizers and officials.
  2. Exercise Self-Control at all times
    1. Respect the rules and regulations of the facility.
    2. Refrain from the use of foul or profane language.
    3. Refrain from the use of drugs, alcohol, or physical force of any kind.

 

SERIOUS MISBEHAVIOUR

Immediate suspension will likely result as a consequence of any of the following:

-  Intimidation or threatening behaviour, be it physical or verbal      threats, or cyber-bullying and the use of social media to spread rumours and gossip.

-  Violence or assault, including verbal

-  Use or possession of drugs or alcohol

-  Possession of any weapon

-  Theft or vandalism

-  Harassment, including race or gender issues

-  Upon review of an incident, placement in an educational setting other than South Delta Secondary may ultimately result.

WEAPONS

Section 2 of the Criminal Code defines a weapon as anything designed or used to intimidate, threaten or harm another person.  Delta School Board Policy prohibits the possession of such objects as pepper sprays, knives, guns, laser pointers or any objects that are intended to be used as weapons. Laser pointers will be confiscated.

 FIRECRACKERS & FIREWORKS

Firecrackers are illegal and hazardous to student safety.  The possession of fireworks by minors is also illegal.  Both are strictly forbidden on school property and will be confiscated from students.  Students will be suspended for any violation of this regulation.

DRUGS & ALCOHOL

The possession, use, or supplying of restricted drugs and/or alcohol is illegal and will not be tolerated in the school, on the grounds, or at school-sponsored activities or event.  Students knowingly in the company of others using illegal substances will receive the same length of suspension as the user(s) even though they themselves have not used the substance at the time they were caught.

 FIGHTING

Any activity that threatens the maintenance of a safe school environment will result in immediate suspension.  This applies to any student who actively participates in, promotes or encourages a fight.  This would also include any student who attends a fight specifically as a spectator. 

VANDALISM & PROPERTY DAMAGE

According to Section 10 of the School Act, students and their parents are liable for any School Board property that is damaged either with intent or through negligence.  Students who destroy or vandalize school property, or the property of others, will be disciplined and required to pay for the losses or damage.

~ STUDENT RESPONSIBILITES ~

ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY

Regular attendance has a major influence on student success in school and is also a legal requirement for all B.C. students below sixteen years of age.  Students should be aware that according to Section 103(3) of the School Act, students sixteen years of age or over may be removed from school for:

  • refusing to comply with the school’s code of conduct, rules and/or policies
  • failing to apply themselves to their studies.

Therefore, unless there is a legitimate reason for absence, students are expected to attend regularly and be on time.  Work missed due to an unexcused absence is given a zero. A persistent pattern of unexcused absences and lates could result in suspension and eventual withdrawal from SDSS as per the School Act.

What to do when you will be absent-

  • try to avoid medical appointments during the school day
  • contact the school the morning of an absence
  • inform your counsellor for extended absences due to chronic illness, family obligations or holidays.
  • sign out at the office if you need to leave the school during the day because of illness or an appointment.  Sign in again at the office if you return during the same day.
  • After an absence, you are responsible for catching up on any missed work (see teachers upon your return)

 

EXTENDED ABSENCE & VACATION DURING SCHOOL TIME

Every consideration will be made on behalf of a student in the event of a compassionate leave.  For extended absence due to illness, the School District may provide a Visiting Teacher to work with the student.  This service is set up by the school counsellor. The school does not endorse students missing school time for vacations.  This is a parental decision.  Since credit cannot be given for work that is not done, an absence may result in lower grades.  We strongly advise that families take their vacations during regular school breaks. Individual teachers have the discretion to decide what work, if any, a student may make up; however, most often the activities conducted in class are impossible to duplicate out of class.  In all instances, any arrangements must be made directly with the student’s individual teacher.

SYNREVOICE AUTOMATED PHONE SYSTEM

This phone system will automatically phone the home of students who have missed a class or classes when a reason for the absence has not already been called in by a parent or guardian.  This system is meant to deter skipping of classes and is meant to assist families in confirming their child’s attendance.

ACCIDENTS & ILLNESS

Students should come to the office if they feel ill or are injured at school.  If the illness or injury appears serious, the school will make every effort to contact parents.  If parents cannot be contacted, school administration will act in “loco parentis” and secure any necessary medical attention.  The medical room can not retain students who feel unable to attend class because of a headache or fever.  Students who are feeling ill will be permitted to leave for home after the school contacts their parents or a emergency contact person.  The school will not provide medication to students unless the medical card and medication is provided.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

SDSS values honesty, therefore, any form of plagiarism or cheating is considered serious misconduct.  Plagiarism is the copying or reproduction of any work without the proper recognition of the original authors.  Cheating includes having someone else do an assignment for you, submitting the same assignment more than once, deviously getting answers to a test, and consciously assisting another student to attain marks through misrepresentation.  THESE BEHAVIOURS COMPROMISE THE ACADEMIC INTEGRITY OF OUR SCHOOL AND YOUR GOOD REPUTATION.

“At the teacher's discretion, a student may receive a zero on a paper or assignment for plagiarism. The incident will be recorded by the teacher and communicated to the parent/guardian.  In the event of another incident of cheating or plagiarism occurs, the administration will be informed and will meet with the student and the student’s parents.

 

The following will further constitute cheating or plagiarism:

§         Copying and pasting text from on-line media or web site

§         Transcribing text or simply modifying text from any printed material, such as books, magazines, encyclopedias or newspapers

§         Replacing a few select words using a thesaurus does not constitute original work.

§         Using a photograph, video or audio without permission or acknowledgement

§         Using another student's work, even with a few changes in the wording, and claiming it as one's own, even with permission. This is known as collusion and is not acceptable.

§         Acquiring work from commercial sources is academically unethical

§         Translation from one language to another is not using one's own words.

§         Using work that was written for another class or another purpose without getting permission from both teachers

§         Allowing another student to copy your work;

§         Taking credit for a group assignment to which you have not contributed anything

§         Looking at another student’s test to view his/her answers

§         Talking to another student during a test

§         Use of a cell phone during a test
